Marriage Restoration Programme – Step 1

Understanding Where We Are

Restoration begins with honesty.
Before a marriage can be restored, we must first be willing to acknowledge where the relationship is today. We cannot restore what we are unwilling to recognise.
This step is not about blaming your spouse, defending yourself, or deciding who is right or wrong. It is about slowing down, looking honestly at your marriage, and recognising the areas that may need healing, rebuilding or strengthening.

Take a Moment to Reflect
Ask yourself:

1. What is happening in our marriage right now? Think beyond the most recent disagreement. What patterns have you noticed over time?

2. What has changed between us? Consider your communication, emotional connection, trust, friendship, intimacy and willingness to spend time together.

3. What are we carrying from the past? Unresolved hurt, disappointment, unforgiveness and repeated conflicts can quietly affect a marriage

4. What do I personally need to take responsibility for? Restoration begins when we become willing to examine our own actions – not only the actions of our spouse.

5. What would I like our marriage to become? Look beyond simply surviving the current difficulty. What kind of marriage do I genuinely desire to build?

A Foundation for Restoration

You do not need to solve everything today. You are beginning by understanding where you are. Be honest. Be patient. Be willing to listen. Be willing to learn. And be willing to take responsibility for the part that belongs to you. Restoration is a journey, and every journey begins with a first step.

Reflection

Take some quiet time together, if possible, and discuss these questions without interruption or blame.

Listen to understand-not simply to respond. If emotions become overwhelming, pause and return to the conversation when you are both ready.

Your marriage does not have to remain where it is today.

Your First Action

Take a few quiet moments to reflect on your marriage. Without blaming yourself or your spouse, identify one area of your relationship that you believe needs the most attention right now. Write it down.

Write your answer in a notebook or somewhere private where you can return to it later. Be honest. there is no perfect answer.

A Simple Commitment

‘I am willing to take one honest step towards the restoration of my marriage.”

Your Next Step. You have taken the first step: Becoming honest about where your marriage is today. You don’t need to have all the answers yet. But before we can begin rebuilding, we need to understand what brought us to this point. What happened? When did things begin to change? What pattern has developed? What hurts remain unresolved? Step 2 will help you look beneath the surface – not to assign blame, but to understand. Take your time. Be honest. Listen carefully. Your next step is to understand what happened.
